Robert Louis Stevenson Website - RLS Website

"The web, then, or the pattern, a web at once sensuous and logical, an elegant and pregnant texture: that is style, that is the foundation of the art of literature"

(RLS, "On Some Technical Elements of Style in Literature", Contemporary Review 47 [April 1885])

The RLS Website is the most comprehensive site dedicated to Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), providing resources for academics, school children, and people interested in learning about RLS. This site is particularly significant because it holds images not seen by the general public before.

The site celebrates Robert Louis Stevenson's life and works, encouraging users to discover the many faces of RLS. He is not just a children's author, but also a poet, a playwright, a Gothicist, an essayist, a historian, an anthropologist, a Victorian, a Modernist and a Postmodernist, amongst other things. By detailing his diverse writing career, the RLS Website aims to bring Stevenson out of the margins of literary study.

The left menu contains information about the site, the people, museums and literary trusts we would like to thank and who have helped the site come into being, information about copyright, contact information, a sitemap and search engine to help you navigate around.

Visitors of the previous RLS site will find most of the familiar content in the Archive section.

The RLS Website thanks those organizations and individuals who have given us permission to use the images in their collections. These images are usually credited at the bottom of each page, or underneath the image. For more information, see our copyright page.

We would like to offer special thanks to the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, who funded the site.
