Hand & Eye Editions is publishing a new edition of 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' in November 2010. It will be illustrated with eight pictures by Angela Barrett, who is, perhaps, best known as a children's illustrator. There is often a dark edge to her work, however, that is ideal for Stevenson's tale. As Ian Beck, himself a successful illustrator and author, says in his Afterword, she is 'an adept at finding beauty in menace.'
'Angela Barrett delights in the details of the Victorian scene,' he continues, 'Drawing attention to the architecture of the streets and squares where the story is set... Figures emerge from the fog, a veiled woman, and behind her the wraith of a man, further off the hint of a carriage...'
The text will be printed by letterpress on grey Ingres paper with digitally printed illustrations tipped in. The standard edition of 150 copies, size 210 x 120 mm, will be hand bound in black cloth with a foil-blocked cover and will cost £150.00, or £120.00 if ordered before publication.
